Section 6 · What to order

What to Order: A Caribbean Menu Glossary

Five terms cover most menus.

Jerk
A marinade-and-grill method built on allspice and scotch bonnet peppers. Allwyn's seasoning, per BlogTO, adds cinnamon, cloves, ginger and star anise. Chicken is the default; pork is common.
Oxtail
Slow-braised oxtail served over rice, usually with a thick gravy. It is the plate to order when the menu says "saucy" or "tender, juicy."
Doubles
Two small fried flatbreads (bara) holding curried chickpeas (channa), topped with chutneys and pepper sauce. A Trinidadian street-food staple, eaten as a snack or breakfast.
Roti
A soft flatbread wrapped around curry. Dhal puri roti, which Island Foods lists, has ground split peas worked into the dough. Alloo pie, on Debe's menu, is a fried potato pie.
Ackee & saltfish
Jamaica's national dish: ackee fruit sautéed with salt cod. We have not confirmed which North York spots serve it, so ask before you go.
If you do one thing

Go to Smoke 'N' Roti on Keele Street.

3320 Keele St, 4.7 stars across 1,527 Google reviews: the combination of wood-fire chicken, hand-made roti and oxtail is hard to beat in one stop.
