The 30-second answer

Start at 5533 Yonge St for a cafe meal, then walk the Yonge strip for tarts and noodles.

Good Luck HK Cafe at 5533 Yonge St (4.4 stars across 2,103 Google reviews) is North York's best-known Hong Kong cafe, and Pine House Cafe at 149 Ravel Rd does baked rice with a lunch set that includes a drink and a mug of soup. For cart noodles go to Petit Noodle at 5095 Yonge St; for an egg tart go to Lucullus Bakery at 5200 Yonge St.

This is different from our dim sum guide and Chinese restaurant guide: a Hong Kong cafe is an all-day, set-meal place, not a banquet hall. Ratings are Google Places figures as of October 4, 2026.

What Is a Cha Chaan Teng?

A cha chaan teng (茶餐廳, "tea restaurant"), sometimes called a bing sutt (冰室), is a Hong Kong-style cafe that serves East-meets-West comfort food all day.

Expect a menu that runs from milk tea and pineapple buns to baked pork chop rice, curry noodles and thick-cut French toast, usually sold as a set: a main, a drink and often a soup. The Hong Kong milk tea-making technique was added to Hong Kong's intangible cultural heritage list in 2017, and the pineapple bun in 2014.

Cafes like these cluster in Markham and Richmond Hill, but North York has more than most people expect, especially around Yonge and Finch. Cafe of this type is a different meal from the dim sum restaurants in our guide: cheaper, faster, and open through the afternoon.

⚠ Common mix-up

A Hong Kong cafe is not a dim sum restaurant.

Dim sum is steamer baskets and carts, usually weekend lunch. A cha chaan teng is a set-meal cafe. For the first, see our dim sum guide; for the wider Chinese field, see Chinese restaurants in North York.

Section 4 · What to order

What to Order: A First-Timer's Cheat Sheet

Six items cover most Hong Kong cafe menus.

Hong Kong milk tea
Strong black tea blended with evaporated milk, served hot or iced. It often comes included in a lunch set. The brewing technique was listed as intangible heritage in Hong Kong in 2017.
Pineapple bun (bolo bao)
A sweet bun with a crackled sugar crust that looks like a pineapple. It contains no pineapple. Lucullus lists it; in many cafes it is served with a slab of butter.
Baked pork chop rice
Fried rice topped with pork chop, sauce and cheese, baked until browned. Pine House does baked rice with brisket, pork chop or chicken fillet, in tomato or Portuguese sauce.
Egg tart
A custard tart in a pastry shell. Lucullus Bakery (5200 Yonge St) uses a 30-year-old recipe; Kin-Kin Bakery also sells them.
Cart noodles (車仔麵)
A bowl you build: choose the broth, the noodle and the toppings. Petit Noodle at 5095 Yonge St is the specialist.
The set lunch
A main, a drink and often a soup for one price. At Pine House, lunch sets come with a drink and a mug of daily soup. It is the best value on any HK cafe menu.
If you do one thing

Order a set lunch at Pine House Cafe.

A baked rice plate with a drink and soup at 149 Ravel Rd is the clearest introduction to the format — then finish with an egg tart at Lucullus Bakery, 5200 Yonge St.

Section 5 · Worth the drive

When It's Worth Driving to Markham

The largest Hong Kong cafe clusters are in Markham and Richmond Hill, outside our coverage area. Dealmoon's Hong Kong cafe guide names Cafe de Hong Kong and Cha Kee among Markham's best, and Marathon Donuts and Coffee Shop in Scarborough is known for its award-winning milk tea. We have not Places-checked those, so treat them as leads rather than endorsements.
