Beyond ballet and ballroom

Cultural and World Dance.

North York has no dedicated cultural dance school we could verify on an official page, so this section points to where the styles are taught inside the studios above.

Latin: Star Dance Centre (4750 Yonge St) and Dance Life Studios (4590 Dufferin St) teach salsa and bachata. Bollywood and K-pop: Dance ConneXion (245 Sheppard Ave W) lists both, and the City of Toronto's program page lists Bollywood and K-pop among 30+ styles. We found no verified North York school for Persian or Chinese classical dance; check City programs and community centres each term.

How to Choose a Dance Studio.

  1. Pick the goal first. Recreational weekly classes, exam-track ballet and competition teams are different commitments. CDM and Performing Dance Arts list both recreational and competitive options.
  2. Use the trial. Performing Dance Arts offers a free trial class and CDM lets you book trial classes. Watch how the teacher handles a room of beginners.
  3. Compare cost per class, not headline price. At Dance ConneXion the 20-class pass works out to $20 a class against a $25–$30 drop-in; at York School of Dance the fee is per term.
  4. Ask what is extra. Costumes, recital fees and exam fees are the usual add-ons. York School of Dance notes second-term costume fees.
  5. Check the schedule against school and work. Weeknight classes at the Yonge-Sheppard studios are easy by subway; Leslie Street and Cartwright Avenue are easier by car.
  6. For adults, start with a drop-in. A single $25 class tells you more about a studio's vibe than a website will.
