How to Choose a Martial Arts School.

  1. Start with the goal. Fitness and confidence point to Muay Thai or karate; self-defence points to Krav Maga or BJJ; discipline and structure for a young child points to karate or judo.
  2. Book the trial before the membership. Gracie Barra, Grant MMA and Toronto Kids Karate offer a free first class, and Krudar charges $10. Take one class at two schools and compare the coaching, not the logo.
  3. Watch a kids class from the side. Look for small groups, coaches who correct technique by name, and age-matched partners.
  4. Ask what is included. Uniforms, gloves, grading fees and competition fees are the usual extras. Ask for the full first-year cost in writing.
  5. Check the contract. House of Combat advertises no annual contract; other schools may use 3-month or 12-month terms. Know the cancellation rule before you sign.
  6. Think about the commute. A school 10 minutes from home gets attended in February; one across the city does not.
